If you are considering installing a irrigation system in the Tampa Bay area here are a few things I would recommend, from Dan Letbetter-Owner.
-Pick a licensed contractor or pick a company that is sponsored by a license contractor. The easiest way to know if you have either of those things is to request a permit for your new irrigation installation. Water Oak irrigation pulls permits for our new Irrigation installation.
-Do I install drip Irrigation? I recently got recertified for the Water Star program sponsored by the FNGLA and the water resource managers and what I learned about drip is striking. We learned that drip irrigation should not be installed in a landscape for more than two years. The reason is the materials are not designed for long term use. In addition in Water Star you have to select the right plants and put them in the right place, so drip irrigation is to help your new plants get established without worrying about mother nature doing it.
-What is an MP Rotator? MP Rotators are a nozzle that go on top of a rainbird, hunter irrigation or k rain pop up sprinkler head and eliminate the atomization of the water. You have probably seen your neighbors irrigation system misting and water floating away? Well if you have the MP Rotator prevents that misting which means more water on the desired watering areas and less water usage.
-Is it necessary to use a blue tooth controller? For a lack of better response…yes. But not because an old timer won’t work, but because a blue tooth timer puts you back in sync with your lawn. I have seen it time and time again, a neglected lawn becomes a hobby due to the features on a blue tooth irrigation timer like a Rachio or the new Rainbird wi-fi timers. Another cool feature is when you sign up for our maintenance package we don’t need to disturb anyone while doing our work, we can hop on to the timer via blue tooth and start working! That’s all nice but the serious reason is your timer will connect to weather stations receiving real time data from weather stations. This enables your timer to be able to shut off more efficiently that a rain sensor.
-Do I need a rains sensor? YES!! It is technically illegal for us to work on your irrigation system without a rain sensor and a backflow prevention or check valve depending on the setup. In addition it is the line of defense from your irrigation running in the rain.
-How long does it take to install a system? In most cases we can install a four zone irrigation system in one day. The biggest thing that changes the rate in speed is trees and the roots they have. Palms are the worst but oaks are the common pvc pipe disturber.
